Exploring Product Design

‘Uncategorized’ Category

Lately…

Been working hard as a product design consultant since 2012.  I’m working on the balance of my activities so I can start on some new projects, but in the meantime here’s some interesting stuff I’ve been tracking:

Marker Rendering

In March of 2012 I took a course on Advanced Marker Rendering techniques at Emily Carr. It was a really interesting course and I feel that I learned a lot! Marker rendering is a great way to quickly express a concept but still present it professionally. Here are some of the exercises I completed during the course:

First we learned how to render different types of metal. The lines in this exercise were created by our instructor, Chan.

Next we learned to render different types of stone.

Then, glass. This piece was drawn from life.

Wood was the last type of material we explored.

The lines in this drawing were created by our instructor, Chan.

This was drawn from life.

Our last assignment was to design a piece from our imagination and render the same piece as if it was created with different materials. The object I chose to design was a nesting salt-and-pepper shaker as well as an oil and vinegar dispenser. The design choices I made were largely based on “what would look interesting when the materials were switched” more than any practical purpose.

Ideation for the dispenser.

Finished rendering.

The marker course was a lot of fun, I learned a lot! I look forward to taking more courses in the future, if I’m able.
